Book of Matthew

Why would a course on the history of political thought need to include the Book of Matthew?

First, since it covers the same ground as Mark, we will be looking for all of the themes we find there.

Second, we have a clear inheritance from the Greek tradition in Matthew 22:13 of a scenario set up in Plato’s Euthyphro. So we know that the knowledge producers working on the book of Matthew knew this dialogue.

Matthew like the Euthyprho text approaches questions of ethics and justice.

Next, the book of Matthew is about Jesus’ place in the Jewish tradition.  The book begins with an ancestral lineage addressed to a Jewish audience.

We have the political context of Rome on the one hand, becoming a multicultural empire.

Then we have the tribes of Israel who have a different relation to a different law, different commander but somehow coexist with and within the larger political state, whose laws must also be obeyed.

This question of a variety of smaller ethno groups within a larger political organization comes back with multiculturalism debates of contemporary political philosophy.

Finally, of interest in the book of Matthew is the third layer, the individual.  The direct address to the disciples regarding their choice about their life.

In the gospels, we have the question that keeps coming up Who is Jesus? There are at least three questions here. Who is he to the Romans? Who is he to the Jews? and who is he to the individual.

And these are contexts of ethical inquiry how must I treat myself, others in cultural community, and other in political community.

We can see the study of ethics began before and has gone on since in an academic way, and some sort of belief is not required for ethical behavior or investigation.

So we now have multiple models of law and authority. We have the example of Moses as a response to the problem of the lawgiver, which is odd since he was more a law receiver.

And the covenant as one model of political agreement, and the other examples of leadership in the pentateuch.

and we have all of the models of law and political authority in Roman history known to this point.

The Western tradition is stacked with tradition and we are only on the first century.

Why does the confluence of Jewish and Roman traditions of power and authority concern us? Because I put Hobbes’s Leviathan at the center of the blog.  Part of an early modern tradition of imagining the foundation of the modern state in the model of a covenant. Moses is an archetype of a lawgiver mentioned by nearly all political philosophers in this tradition.

Secondly, the presence of Roman law. Students of the history of political philosophy can mine Roman history for lessons of power and authority all night long, as did Machiavelli.

In the King’s Two Bodies, Ernst Kantorwicz explores how concepts in Roman law came to permeate early modern law. For example, the idea of a corporate body that does not die, the metaphor of the body for a polity the body politic and with corporation also the concept of personhood. The idea of office and office holding and the fiscus.

Another wrench thrown by the Gospels is the universality of the message.

How could a message so personal, known by direct experience also be universal?

16:24-26

Matthew 16:24–26 (NRSVUE)

24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any wish to come after me, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 25 For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit them if they gain the whole world but forfeit their life? Or what will they give in return for their life?”

11  This is the chapter where Jesus confirms John is Elijah.

Primacy of listening.

Promise of the Kingdom of Heaven involves being greater than John, but John is also the greatest man that ever lived.

So getting to the Kingdom of God involves a self overcoming so profound it would make you greater than the greatest person who ever lived.

Witnessing miracles does not make people turn away from sin.

27 This verse is important because it says knowledge of God is possible via revelation.

Revelation is an other to Reason. Did you know it by reason or revelation.

Theology takes seriously the idea of revelation, philosophy does not.

Aristotlean view of contemplation kind of an apex of reason not an other to it.

Lets draw a crude picture of verse 27

This picture is lacking the play of light and dark it would need for the concept of revelation.

Circular reasoning is not doing it right. Knowledge by revelation in a picture is circular.

Father

28: seems to be directly addressing people who have been treated like beasts of burden. verse of comfort his yoke is easy and load light.

12: ostensible break with Jewish tradition

(is he quoting himself and calling it scripture?)

Telling people their ideas of guilt and innocence are flawed.

Pharisees plotted to kill him.

Fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy

25:”Any country that divides itself into groups which fight each other will not last very long.  And any town or family that divides itself into groups which fight each other will fall apart. So if one group is fighting another in Satan’s kingdom, this means that its already divided into groups and will soon fall apart.”

This is an interesting teaching that makes you want to throw political parties out the window.

But it also implies that we are now in “Satan’s Kingdom” (spiritual warfare attitude of the 1990s spiritual warfare books) in tension with another attitude about the world/earth now.

27) You say that I drive out demons because Beelzebul gives me the power to do so. Well then who gives your followers the power to drive them out? (Who is he addressing? seems like they are talking about some people who were driving out demons.)

What your followers do proves that you are wrong! No it is not Beelzebul, but God’s Spirit who gives me the power to drive out demons, which proves that the Kingdom of God has already come upon you.

This verse is so huge. He’s saying God’s spirit is what creates the healing. Also that these followers also did it. He is the “Kingdom of God” among us and followers have already imitated him.

30 It is somehow unforgivable to speak against the Holy Spirit.

34 The mouth speaks what the heart is full of

48: Non bloodline view of familial relation.

Book 13  Have the agricultural metaphor

Emphasis on listening.

Purpose of the Parable

The first line was already in Greek philosophy – You already “have” the knowledge so coming to know is akin to remembering.

Understanding problematic because it is possible to listen but not hear, look and not see so a sharp mind is something that is beyond use of the senses.

And also saying that parables somehow address this shortcoming.

some are not deep so give up the message (seed rolls away)

for some the message gets choked out by focus on this life

The agricultural imagery continues with parables of the weeds, mustard seed, yeast

use of parables to communicate knowledge (referencing the creation of the world which could be reference to earlier debates)

I will use aparbles when I speak to them; I will tell them things unknown since the creation of the world.” (Implies coincidence of knowledge and creation)

back to the parable of the weeds and then an end of the world statement that sounds like a depiction of hell.

the Son of Man will send out his angels to gather up our of his Kingdom all those who cause people to sin and all others who do evils things, and thy will throw them into the fiery furnace, where they will cry and gnash their teeth. The God’s people will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom. Listen, then if you have ears!

parable of the net says something about the end times

49 It will be like this at the end of the age: the angels will go out and gather up the evil people from among the good and will throw them into the fiery furnace where they will cry and gnash their teeth.

Book 14 The Death of John the Baptist    The sadness of this story was profound because Herod actually enjoyed listening to John the Baptist.  It says something really damning about political life.  So as to not be embarrassed in public he has a special teacher killed.

Conflict between political and ethical life felt on a really personal level.

So he experiences this deep sadness about John, and lonliness and goes on to perform the miracles of the feeding of the 5,000 and walking on water.

I feel like this part where Peter walks on water is one of the most important parts.

28: Then Peter spoke up, Lord if it is really uou, order me to come out on the water to you.

Come answered Jesus. So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water to Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he was afraid and started to sink down in the water. Save me, Lord, he cried. At once Jesus reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, “Wha tlittle faith you have! Why did you doubt?”

Book 15 People came at him for not being super observant of traditional norms. He calls out religious hypocrisy.

How right Isaiah was when he prophiesied about you!

“These people, says God, honor me with their words, but their heart is really far away from me. It is no use for them to worship me, because they teach man made rules as thought they were my laws!”

Then Jesus called the crowd to him and said to them, Listen and understand! It is not what goes into a person’s mouth that makes him ritually unclean, rather, what comes out of it makes him unclean.   … the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these are the things that make a man ritually unclean. For from his heart come the evil ideas which lead him to kill, commit adultery, and do other immoral things, to rob, lie, and slander others. These are the things that make a person unclean.

Chapter 16: verse 15

What about you? he asked them, “Who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.

Good for you, Simon son of John! answered Jesus. For this truth did not come to you from any human being, but it was given to out directly by my Father in heaven.  (description of truth by revelation)

keys to the kingdom (doorway, threshhold image)

The as above so below is inverted as belong so above.

24: Then Jesus said to his disciples If anyone wants to come with me, he must forget himself, carry his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his own life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Will a person gain anything if he wins the whole world but loses his life? Of course not! There is nothing he can give to regain his life.

For the Son of Man is about to come int he glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will reward each one according to his deeds.  I assure you that there are some here who will not die until they have seen the Son of Man come as King.

Chapter 17: Transfiguration

clarification that John the Baptist was Elijah

Chapter 18: At that time the disciples came to Jesus, asking, “Who is the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven?”

So Jesus called a child, had him stand in front of them, and said, I assure you that unless you change and become like children, you will enver enter the Kingdom of heaven.  The greatest in the Kingdom of heaven is the one hwo humbles himself and becomes like this child. And whoever welcomes in my name one such child as this, welcomes me.

Do not cause others to lose their faith.

18: 18-19  And so I tell all of you; what you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and what you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.

And I tell you more: whenever two of you on earth agree about anything your pray for, it will be down for you by my Father in heaven. For where two or three come together in my name, I am there with them.

Greatest commandment in the Law

23  Roles of Teacher, Father and Leader are reserved for the Messiah.

The greatest one among you must be your servant.  Whoever makes himself great will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be made great.

(Kingdom of Heaven as place of reversal. The way people recognize each other on earth does not indicate a status there.

Makes you think about what it would mean to humble oneself.

God lives in the Temple as well as heaven’s throne.

Attack on the teachers of the Law goes on “you neglect to obey the really important teachings of the Law, such as justice and mercy and honesty.

calls them Blind (vision with knowledge)

invokes appearance vs reality

Rhetoric gets intense and accuses them of being like the ancestors that murdered prophets, tells them they are condemned to hell, and calls them murderers.

Love song to Jerusalem after saying they shoot the messenger.

“Jerusalem, Jerusalem! You kill the prophets and stone the meesengers God has sent you!  How many times I wanted to put my arms around all your people, just as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings but you would not let me! And so your Temple will be abandoned and empty.  From now on, I tell you, you will never see me again until you say, ‘God bless him who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Chapter 24

Jesus talks about the destruction of the Temple.

So the disciples ask him about the when of the revolution. “what will happen to show that it is the time for your coming and end of the age.”

The answer is false messiahs, battles, war, famine, earthquakes, and the persecution of Christians. Then there is a lot of preaching and then the end times come.

Then it will be the Awful Horror from the prophesy of Daniel.  Going to have to leave your house and run away

Then there is going to be false prophets and false messiahs who are going to be performing miracles to deceive people (seems like one of the hallmarks of the Holy will turn into a tool of deception)

And then he will come like lightening.

We will have the end of the world darkness, no moon nor stars, and galactic weird behavior. The Son of Man appears people weep, there’s a trump, angles from the four cours gathering of his chosen people from one end of the world to the other.

so when you see all these things, you will know the time is near, ready to being.

Jesus making an invalid prophesy while also warning about false prophets is odd.

So now, we can see that even a God, when having a human experience, can be wrong about something they were convinced of.

We know he had a fore vision of his death and he was correct about that.

So here we have a person really the best case, who is, in one instance incorrect and another instance correct in prophesying.

Now we are getting to see why this kind of statement about the future lacks the epistemic standard we are looking for.

Whats more, the account of the “vision” event which produces the foreknowledge we know its like and unlike other forms of vision.

Did Jesus being wrong about this prophesy dissuade Jews from believing in his divinity?

So, we are left with needing to know more about Jewish messianism and how this passage has been received.

And we are wondering how other scholars, from a Christian horizon but on a text and history basis can tell us about the reconiliation between the godlikeness of Christ and the human incorrectness of Jesus in this instance.

It seems like the one way to save the whole plot from unraveling is to say well, the next coming is not whatever mythological apocalyptic history they thought it was at the time …. ok, I follow, but instead of observing this there is this desire to take up the stories and write how it was that his appearance on earth changed the nature, or playing out, or framework of understanding of the structure of this history.

Some would then also say that this is a next coming of Christ.

but the coming and next coming are somehow framed and not framed by the preceeding stories about the Kingdom of God.

Its almost as if we have some things we don’t want to look at here.  The story turns out to have been incorrect, yet we are not going to abandon that story; and also the man seems to have been fallible while he was having a human experience but let’s skip over that because we are sure he’s God.  What would it mean if coming to earth itself, or was it embodiment can turn the infallible, fallible?
